NEW PHOTOS POSTED FEBRUARY 13, 2006 SEE PHOTOS 6 - 12 BELOW THE LAYOUT I hope you enjoy and are inspired by the layout photos (follow the links at the bottom of this page). Much time, effort and planning has gone into this project. It began with a simple referral from a friend and has evolved into what I truly believe will be one of the finest, most-advanced layouts in existence. What's more, its dual purpose design as both a home office and model railroad lend itself to installation in homes where many modelers believe they have no room for a layout. In addition to featuring cabinetmaker quality, oak construction, the layout will be completely controlled by an EasyDCC Command Control System. At the far left and near the room entry way, there is a display cabinet with glass doors to showcase the customers locomotive and rolling stock collection. Below the showcase is a large door for under-layout access and long term storage complemented by two smaller doors that can conceal hobby tools, paints, or any number of small items. As we progress around the corner, there is a bookshelf in addition to a combination computer workstation and desk area. The top two drawers to the right of the desk are for office supplies while the lower two drawers are for hanging files. The small, middle drawer front contains a "secretary" writing desk, which is topped with solid surface countertop material. This makes for a wonderful writing surface, as well as a great place to do model-building and detailing. If it becomes stained or scratched, it can be easily renewed by a little hand sanding. All four drawers and the "secretary" ride on 26", full extension, ball-bearing drawer slides. Just to the right of the drawers and secretary are two banks of four doors. In, both cases, the large, lower doors conceal horizontal filing cabinets. The upper, smaller doors on the left conceal drawers for additional general storage. The upper, smaller doors on the right will contain two drawers for rolling stock storage, as well as all of the EasyDCC components. Above the railroad, all the way across, is a glass door showcase for displaying other collectibles. This could also be configured with opaque glass or wood door centers for additional storage. The upper showcase has a 2.5" valance on its underside to conceal layout lighting. The strips of wood that are currently bare will soon be covered with sheet styrene on which the backdrop will be painted. Sheet styrene has been chosen because it is less susceptible to cracking from expansion and contraction throughout the seasons. Notice also in one of the photos that themed hardware has been used throughout as an added personal touch. Obviously, from the hardware, you can tell we are modeling the Southern Pacific Railroad. We have chosen to model the transition era, so both steam and diesel locomotives will be present on the railroad.
